Matthew Floriani is a professor of art at Cal State Monterey Bay. He specializes in public art pieces. I had the good fortune to connect with Matthew when he was planning a community mural project in Oakland at the Flax Art Supply Store. Matthew worked with 333arts and a group of volunteers to create a mural covering the south side of the store. I photographed Matthew and his helpers over the course of three weeks in May and June, 2022. Matthew is a strong believer in supporting local communities and helping with revitalization, as opposed to gentrification. This spirit of community and working with under-priveleged groups drives a lot of what Matthew does. It was wonderful to see the community aspect of creating the mural and the positive reaction from those people in the local neighborhood to the addition of a colorful new mural to that street.
